A visually stunning work. Design and Layout are excellent. Many expressive and close shots of the biggest acts of 80s rock. Each page another blow away image. Superb darkly lighted stages with moving subjects only an expert film photographer could capture. This book is more than a decoration, it's a masterwork.

I bought these as Christmas gifts and they were enjoyed by all. So many memories brought back for some and so much to learn for others.

If you're a fan of 80s music, especially if you were lucky enough to attend any live shows by major acts during that era, Julian David Stone's new book will be an essential part of your Rock n' Roll book collection. Given the fact that Stone smuggled professional gear into most of the concerts he photographed, the images have a sense of immediacy and energy missing from the kind of stock shots you get from photographers sanctioned by the artists. Having attended shows by quite a few of the musicians featured in the book, it took me back to a more adventurous time in live music when you could blow into town, score a ticket on the street or at the box office and see your favorite band up close without having to take out a second mortgage. Equally engaging and exciting are the stories the author tells about smuggling his gear into shows, getting hassled by roadies and security, including the pitfalls associated with capturing so many stunning images without being apprehended and ejected. The book is an impressive 12x12 inches, coincidentally the same size as a vinyl LP. In fact, going through it will make you want to dust off your turntable and spin those old copies of Purple Rain, Synchronicity and War. The printing quality of the images contained within is stunning, with sharp contrast and vivid color that you can only get from old-fashioned 35mm film. So if you're old enough to remember what it was like to hold up a cigarette lighter during a rock show encore instead of a smart phone, or if you want to know what it was like, this impressive new photo book will take you back to that storied time of live music in the 80s.

Full Confession, I'm not only a kickstarter backer of this book, but also an old friend of the author's. That said, not only was I completely blown away by the quality and scale of this book, but more than a little relieved to open it and find that there were hardly any photos of the Grateful Dead, which if you know Stone, could have been the entire book ;). So far, I've only scratched the surface of this tome, by skipping ahead to read and marvel at the photos of all my personal favorite bands, but the writing is fun, and the proximity of the pictures is impressive. I was expecting most of the photos to be from the author's home town of San Francisco, but enjoyed the fact that his experience in capturing these moments is global, which adds depth to the stories of sneaking his camera into these gigs. Stone captures so many of today's biggest rock acts when they were barely more than children. A must have for any rock fan.

As a teenager of the 80s, Julian's close-up photos of the rock bands of my youth, hold such a sense of nostalgia for me, especially having grown-up in the Bay Area near the legendary Keystone. In a year where we've lost favorite and iconic rock stars, such as Prince, David Bowie and Tom Petty, it so nice to have them memorialized in their element in a book such as this. Having known Julian since the 6th grade and remembering him with his french horn in jr. high school band, it was a fun and unexpected surprise to find out all of these many years later that he had sneaking his camera equipment in to capture such an amazing collection of live concert photos of the bands I "fan-girled" over back in the day!

This is one of the best "coffee table" music books that I've seen; a nice mix of hugely popular acts like the Police, the Grateful Dead, U2 and Prince, as well as some lesser known bands. The photos are great, but what is also very enjoyable is all of Julian Stone's commentary about his thoughts and experiences at the different shows. The commentaries are insightful and often funny. It's also a kick seeing how young some of these rock stars look in this book, the biggest hoot being Bono's mullet!!

This is a beautiful compilation of photography of some of the most prominent musicians from the 1980's, that now resides on my coffee table transporting me back to another time whenever I choose. The author has shared that during the time these photos were taken, he did not take these with the intent of making a profit, but rather for the sheer admiration of the artists themselves to enjoy on his own afterwards. This passion for those artists comes across in this gorgeous pictorial that now we too can enjoy. For anyone who enjoyed the music/artists during this interesting moment in history, this book is a definite must.

Loved this book! Stunning photographs of your favorite classic bands from the eighties. Fascinating stories about what it was like to sneak cameras, lenses and film (yes, film!) into venues back in the days before cell phones. Makes a perfect coffee table book, certain to engage and entertain the reader!
