Lots of puzzles here for a great price, and the paper they are printed on on takes pencil well. I read some reviews complaining that it is not spiral bound and therefore cumbersome to work in. I just tear out the page I want to work on and put it on a clipboard and it works great. Hey, it's my book and I'll tear it if I want to, tear it if I want to, tear it if I want to....
I am a veteran of New York Times Sunday Crossword Puzzle books. I've already bought 5 or 6 of them over the years.Even before starting this one, I'm disappointed because the clues have been diminished to an almost unreadable 10-point type. All my previous books also contained 200 puzzles, so I see no reason for reducing the type face in this edition. Bad planning, NYT!
This is for those NY Times regular crossword pros. I like puzzles. I like words. I even like challenges. But, in my ignorance of how the NYT schedules their crosswords, I had no idea that I would find these puzzles impossible. I'm going to try the Tuesday puzzles and go from there. Maybe one day I'll be able to do these. P.S. The print is miniscule.
I've been buying these books for years and I was dismayed to find duplicate puzzles. I had just finished one volume, picked this one up, and immediately recognized the themes of the first 5 or 6 puzzles. They happened to be the last few puzzles in the books I had just finished. I'm sure it has happened before, it's just that I didn't remember since it wasn't quite so obvious. However, for the money, they are still the best puzzles going if you like a challenge.
It takes me about 6 months to finish 100% of the NYT crosswords in this omnibus. But for the price--about half the retail cost--I will be a return customer! I actually found it fun to FINISH an incomplete puzzle the previous owner had trouble with! it was like a contest of wits against a silent competitor to see who could answer the toughest clues! Loved every page of it, whether partially finished or never started.
I'm sure these are great puzzles, if I could see them. The print is not only extremely small, but extremely fine. It would be helpful if the type size was mentioned. As I have had many Times books, with normal type size, I did not expect this.
Don't waste your time on Puzzle 69. Some clues missing. Clue numbers don't match up with answers in the grid. Took me awhile to figure out the proofreader was asleep on this one. So far the puzzles have been a very good mix of easy and hard. Except for the 69th "Linkletter Art."
This book contains 200 Sunday Times crossword puzzles from the Shortz era, and you know how witty the definitions can be! Like all Sunday Times puzzles, they are of moderate difficulty, not super-hard like the Saturday ones. The book is well-made, with good quality paper -- much better than the slick glossy Times Sunday magazine paper that doesn't take pencil or ink marks very well -- and for those like me who tear the pages out and then use a clipboard, they tear out easily with no ragged edges. As for the puzzles, well -- is there anyone, anywhere who makes better big Sunday-style puzzles? I've done puzzles from papers all over the USA and the Times are easily the most fun to work.Heartily recommended to puzzle fanatics and casual solvers alike.Scott Morrison
