About the Author
Martin Pegler has a BA Hons in Medieval and Modern History and an MA in Museum Studies, both from University College, London, and was for many years the Senior Curator of Firearms at the Royal Armouries Museum, Leeds. He is the author of a number of books including The Military Sniper since 1914 (Osprey, 2001), Firearms in the American West 1700-1900 (The Crowood Press, 2002), and the highly acclaimed Out of Nowhere: A History of the Military Sniper (Osprey, 2004), and he has also contributed to a number of magazines.Johnny Shumate works as a freelance illustrator living in Nashville, Tennessee. He began his career in 1987 after graduating from Austin Peay State University. Most of his work is rendered in Adobe Photoshop using a Cintiq monitor. His greatest influences are Angus McBride, Don Troiani, and Édouard Detaille.Born in Malaya in 1949, Alan Gilliland spent 18 years as the graphics editor of The Daily Telegraph, winning 19 awards in that time. American and; to a lesser extent, British forces; had been using rifle armed sharpshooters during the American Revolution, War of 1812 and the Napoleonic Wars. Yet the "War Between The States" was one of the first conflicts in which most of the troops on both sides were armed with rifles, and the first I am aware of in which both opposing armies used large bodies of designated riflemen as sharpshooters. In addition to giving precise descriptions of the various rifles and ammunition, as well as of the tactics employed by their users, the author provides an interesting account of the technical evolution of practical rifled firearms suitable for mass issue. Highly recommended for both the enthusiast and general reader.
Sharpshooters have been a part of American wars since colonial days, but the technology to have a major impact on the battlefield became widely available by the time of the Civil War. Specialized individual soldiers and units had access to the increasing range and lethality offered by new Colt, Sharps, Spencer, and Whitworth rifles. The Union had the money and the technology to equip whole units with the new rifles, but the Confederate armies had their fair share of sharpshooters."Sharpshooting Rifles of the American Civil War" is an Osprey Weapons Series book, well authored by Martin Pegler, with illustrations by Johnny Shumate and Alan Gilliland. Roughly the first third of the book is a detailed explanation of the new technologies available for sharpshooting at the start of the Civil War, including which rifles went into widest use and why. For this reviewer, however, the most interesting part of the book were the accounts of actual use on Civil War battlefields. A number of famous incidents, including the death of Union General Sedgwick, turn out to be the work of battlefield sharpshooters.This book provides a remarkably detailed narrative for its concise length (just 80 pages). The author has included a terrific selection of illustrations, diagrams, and photographs, especially of the details of various rifles. His conclusion is well-reasoned and very relevant to the modern battlefield. Highly recommended to the general reader and the student of the Civil War.

Excellent book! As an introduction to the topic, Peglar's book provides insight not just to the weapons available during the Civil War but also to the way they were deployed and the tactics that were used. Like many books produced by Osprey, this small volume packs a punch. The book also looks at the technology of the times and some of the controversy surrounding the adoption of sharpshooting rifles. Peglar also adds his own conclusions as to the effects of sharpshooting had on the adoption of true marksmanship standards in the U.S. Army following the Civil War, something that is worth reading. Includes excellent photos and artwork.
Well written, fun to read-I'm starting on my second read. Some things I do't agree with there'a statement that popping caps make smoke that was detectable; no it was the gunpowder. Wish there were more diagrams of different rifles, there's only one and also wish that there more pictures of the iron sights looking down the barrel and what looking through the scopes looked like. These are personal grips, but if you are a historical rifle enthusiast YOU HAVE TO READ THIS.
