As a physician, I am always looking for helpful educational aides for patients to help take better care of themselves. I found this book to be very easy to read, with enough science to be educational but not too much to be overwhelming or confusing. Dr Rodriquez takes what can be sometimes a very confusing condition and makes it understandable. And with the recipes it doesn't seem to be a "burden" or chore to eat right. With the degree of obesity seen in America, this book should be on everyone's Christmas gift list. Kudos to the authors for a job well done!Douglas Mest MD

JORGE E. RODRIGUEZ, MD, is board-certified in internal medicine with a special fellowship in gastroenterology from Baylor School of Medicine in Dallas, Texas. He has practiced preventive medicine for more than two decades, and appears frequently as a medical expert and guest on television news and talk shows, including The Doctors, The View, The Today Show, Good Morning America, Anderson Cooper 360, and Dr. Phil. He lives and practices in Southern California.A graduate of the University of Chicago and the Gillings School of Global Public Health, SUSAN WYLER, MPH, RDN, LDN, is an adjunct instructor in the nutrition program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In reading through The Diabetes Solution I realized almost immediately this was the book I needed to give my friend who was struggling with controlling his diabetes. Not only are the concepts easy to understand--much easier than other diabetes books I have looked through--but I know my friend, who is a great cook, will really enjoy the recipes. Diabetes is a serious disease, and this book has just the right amount of medical information followed by clear ideas of how to control it for those who are afflicted. The tone is positive and reassuring. Dr. Rodriguez is a good man to have on your side.

This book told me a lot of t hangs I already know. Not to much new. The recipes are for 4to6 servings. I live alone so need smaller recipes. They are also more work than I want to do for one person. While he says it is best to eat plant food most of the recipes call for meat. Seems like a contradiction to me. I am vegetarian so there are not a lot of recipes for me. Wish I had saved my money. Also the information I need to plan my meals is not in a format that is convenient. It is scattered. I would not recommend this book.

This book represents one of the most comprehensive, yet easy-to-read, books on the topics of diabetes and proper nutrition that I've ever read. I wish this book was around 20 years ago when I embarked on my detrimental path toward acquiring Type II diabetes due to poor eating, no exercise and excessive drinking.Dr Rodriguez carefully and thoroughly lays out a clear explanation of the exceedingly complex process of metabolism and how diabetes comes to be. He then goes into complete detail on how different foods interact with metabolism and which foods to include/exclude into a healthy diet. Dr. Rodriguez also does a fantastic job of demystifying the myriad of diabetes drugs.Given the profound incidents of Type II diabetes in America, I feel this should be "required reading" for everybody to help them avoid this disease.Here is something to keep in mind: after reading this book, you'll be able to more intelligently communicate with your health practitioner, family & friends so that you will be able to manage your type II diabetes more effectively. In helping them understand Type II diabetes, they won't roll their eyes whenever you say "I can't eat that".The book also introduces the "Blood Sugar Budget" diet plan which, after a week of doing it, is very easy to understand and follow. Most importantly, since it is based on essential food groups, it is easy to incorporate any meals you have into the diet. While you do have to watch serving size, you won't have to spend any time counting calories, carbs, proteins, etc.While this guide is definitely not a cookbook, the collection of recipes is impressive, delicious and introduces a variety of foods/cuisines to keep your diet interesting. Since I lead a very active social life, I was concerned about attending parties/get-togethers and not being able to eat anything. However, I now find it entertaining to bring one of the appetizers/snacks from the book to a party and have the guest rave about how delicious it is (e.g. cheesy Brussels Bites).I will add that, until he relocated to a different city, Dr. Rodriguez was my personal physician and successfully guided me to full-control of my Type II diabetes. I do like to say he saved my life, but most assuredly he extended it substantially. Although, my personal relationship with "Dr. Rod" did not affect this review (honestly!!), it is nice to see a publication that embodies the understanding & care that Dr. Rodriguez gave me.

Even if you've been diabetic for a couple of years, this is THE up-to-date book to own. Dr. Jorge E. Rodriquez & Susan Wyler, RDN, together cover every question you might imagine, including a thorough discussion of all meds available from pills to insulin, with good humor, plain language, & empathy. I haven't yet tried any of the 101 recipes included, but looked over a few & they sound quite tasty & easily prepared. This is a book to refer to again & again, not only for the information, but for the support needed to maintain a positive attitude toward living with this unpleasant & dangerous disease.Initially I took out this book from the library, but soon realized I wanted a copy of my own, to mark important passages & ideas. Don't hesitate on this one, get it when you're looking for help.

Very thorough, scientific based, no hype book on how to prevent and treat diabetes. Dr Rodriguez writes with his heart as well as his head. The recipes in the last part of the book give practical ways to put part of the regime he proposes into action. My wife and I will be reading through his book with our adult children.

This book should be required reading for everyone. Although I am not diabetic, I am considered pre diabetic just like an astounding number of Americans. Since modifying my diet according to recommendations in the book, I've lost weight and brought down my glucose readings to be acceptable. The book has honestly been life altering for both my husband and me.

I am in the process of reading this book. It has several good suggestions and explanations.
