I don't mind reading most text books. I do mind this one.First, the coil binding is problematic. The terminal coil ends with the end bent at 90 degrees toward the book. Assuming I can start out with it laying correctly, it never ends that way. My pages have this giant gouge at the bottom from where the mechanics of the coil create conditions of ever increasing scraping. Not my favorite thing to do to have to stop what I'm doing and fix it because the margins allow for little buffer to safety.Second, you'll see the same topics and headings under increasing difficulty. I understand wanting to build up to it but I would much rather have one section dedicated to just opinions and a separate one for Supreme Court and a separate one for each topic. I was doing the ICW quizzes on LexisNexis and it took me an hour each quiz because of having to decipher the ways of the book. Even the was was like, "No, sorry, we're looking at chapter 16 but you really need to go to chapter 12 because of this Supreme Court exception. " Also, ALWD needs to start lobbying in every state for some consistency. The general rules are not so general.

As a 1L, I remember finding the Bluebook initially difficult to use for a bunch of reasons, but especially because Bluebook has two sets of rules depending on whether you are writing for law review or for work. The ALWD manual has just one set of rules for everybody. Simple. If you need to cite a case, then flip to the sub-chapter titled "case citations" and find everything you need on the subject right there. Unlike the Bluebook, this is divided into normal chapters (like most other textbooks), so you don't have to waste time flipping back and forth looking for stuff. Again, simple and easy. Unlike the Bluebook, you don't waste a bunch of time "learning" how to use this because it is intuitive.
Awesome! Awesome! Awesome! I cannot explain how thrilled I am with this book.I had to buy it for my first legal writing class in law school and have used it almost every time I have to write since. I was a hard core fan of Little Brown Handbook before Law School and this is basically the law school version of it. I love how easy it is to use. It is up to date and has all of the resources needed for a law student to successfully navigate that first year. I will use this well into my practice as a first stop for legal writing questions.
I highly highly highly recommend using the provided tabs in the back and just tab to your hearts content in order to get the information you need quickly. It's a great reference tool and has been invaluable to me in LRW this year. I'm sure it'll be handy in my coming two years of law school and beyond as well (as long as I don't practice in OR since they follow Bluebook and not ALWD at the state level, irritating but whatever).It's super easy to reference since every single paragraph is numbered, making corrections from the TA or Prof really easy (assuming they actually use the catalog system).
Purchased it for school, great condition
Several years ago, I was a member of my law school's law review. I used ALWD on a daily basis for editing. I can say from first-hand experience that ALWD is an excellent citation manual. However, the binding on my book was very weak; it started to fall apart about 3 weeks after purchase. The same was true for a number of my classmates. I oftentimes transported the book in my backpack and I'm sure it got jostled around a bit. However, it seems like the publisher should have designed the binding to withstand this type of wear and tear when one considers that law students constitute such a large market for the book.I would love to see ALWD publish a hardback version of the third edition. I'd be the first in line to purchase it, even if the cost was a bit higher than that of the spiral-bound version.Perhaps our school bookstore simply got a batch of ALWDs with substandard bindings. Have any other ALWD purchasers experienced similar problems with the bindings on their manuals? Feel free to comment.
Legal citations are never fun, but ALWD will make you hate your life, your professional choices, and the process of legal writing in general less than Bluebook. Unfortunately, many law journals will force you to adhere to BB anyway, but I'll use ALWD any time I have the option.
