Great book on Christian Spirituality

It is an excellent book, for personal use and for my use as a spiritual director in guiding others on their spiritual journeys.

I was impressed with the condition of this used book. The content was what I'd hoped for- down to earth and relatable.

All to often prayer is viewed as a perfunctory task that we go through in order to communicate with God. Our prayers may consist of flowery words that are not relevant to our lives and sound artificial to our ears. Is it a surprise then that people have such great difficulty with prayer? Joseph Schmidt challenges us in breaking the above view by suggesting another alternative in communicating with God. Why not honestly reflect on the daily events of our lives and become aware of God's word and work in them? In other words, pray our experiences which give meaning to life instead of babbling to God about things that don't touch us. If God is the source of our existence then we can know God through our experiences. Prayer takes on a new meaning and enables us to enter in life more fully and intereact intimately with the God who Loves us for who and what we are. Such a notion is radical and gives us a new perspective in honestly sharing ourselves with God. Praying Our Experiences shows us the process of how we can get to know ourselves as God knows us. Step by step Schmidt introduces us to a way in which we can begin the experience. This is not a formula driven book on prayer where you learn techniques for praying. Our author presents to us a guide to enable you to develop a more fully developed prayer life devoid of the barriers which we place in the way of knowing ourselves and God. Such a book is an excellent guide in helping you to achieve a deeper intimacy of God in your prayer life.

Having read two other books by Brother Joe I was looking for something else and came cross this small volume. Brother Joe takes the reader along a path of enlightenment for these days. If one finds oneself at the short end for prayer time or finds that the work has really intruded into his or hers private time Brother Joe offers a choice. He shows how one can take what is perceived as the ordinary and the mundane and find a souce of prayer. I found the suggestions good and have used some in my daily prayer.Thanks again Brother Joe you have had three successes in my life.

I bought copies for friends, family members, and used it with classes that I taught. The praise for the book has been uniformly enthusiastic. Prayer is not just for clergy, rabbis, monks, and nuns: we can all pray, whenever and wherever we are, in any way that we can. The most important prayer comes from the heart and is honest communication about the real events of our lives. POE may be short in pages, but it is long on wisdom. I have returned to my well-worn copy over and over in the last 20 years whenever I have needed a reminder that the Creator is always willing to listen to prayers from my experience. I am delighted that the editors offer this anniversary edition: well done. The book is a gift to all of us.

As of this writing, there doesn't seem to be a real reference manual for HLSL and the shader assembly language. This book makes a good effort at filling that role, however.The graphics programmer is likely to find this very useful. It integrates C application code with shader examples. It also discusses on-the fly compilation, use of resources for shader source code, the relationships between vertex and pixel shaders, texture samplers, and 'techniques' for pulling all the pieces together. Performance programming gets some discussion, but isn't a central topic. Appendices specify the shader language in dryly formal terms, but the descriptive chapters make most language features very clear.The shader programming model is decidedly non-standard. A rendering program does not work at all like a C program. Yes, a C/C++ programmer will be able to follow a shader's internals easily enough. The problem, though, is that a C program is in charge of what data gets handled when. Everything in a rendering program is silently a callback, however. It's invoked by some execution engine that sequences the input and output data, and even synchronizes multiple (and almost invisible) threads of execution. The hardware rendering program also interacts strongly with the application running in the main processor, partly through "semantics", reflective "annotations", and various parameter-setting mechanisms. There is a huge amount of mechanism at work, and it gives the real meaning to the interacting programs on the host and graphics engine. That mechanism is described in a black-box way, what it does rather than how it works. I think I've reverse engineered the workings, enough for my purposes, but this book did not address my needs directly.Still, it's the best I've found. Real graphics programs, like games and scientific visualization, are much more than lines and circles. This book, with its examples, will surely help the beginner acquire a working knowledge.//wiredweird

Too much of the book is dedicated to showing assembly language shaders. The examples are built with the DirectX SDK and framework that was available when it was written, and won't compile with the later SDKs (I have June 2005). Other than that, it is a good reference to supplement the difficult to read SDK documentation.

I appreciated this book because it was inexpensive and about a subject that is not usually discussed--the brain and the mind. I gleamed a lot of good food for thought and it introduced me to a field of science that I was not familiar with. It is important to understand what happens within the brain during mystical or spiritual experiences to see that we are not using some "God section" of the brain, but rather fully engaging our senses and perceptions. It also debunks the evolutionary theory that humans factored in an idea of God as part of a survival mechanism. If I don't give it more stars it is because it reads more like the author's notes than a balanced treatise. There were some parts that were hard for me to follow--but I got the general point, Then there is an interesting section of Carmelites and Christian mystics, and finally the author's own personal experience. It is a hodge podge sort of a book, but obviously put together at an inexpensive price in order to share their findings with us. Was it worth the price? Yes. Was it worth the read? Yes.

This book is absolutely awesome. The author takes a totally scientific approach to spiritual experiences and makes it clear that the traditional approach of materialist scientists is actually the approach of one religious view, materialism, toward another view that conflicts.with the believer's religion. He doesn't call it that but that's what it is.He presents the scientific evidence that supports many things that materialists dismiss as religion.

Helps me understand why practice at meditation and prayer bring so much more experience.And as a neuroscientist by training, i appreciate this academic look at the importance of spirituality.

This book strongly argues that non-materialist neuroscience is more true to the nature of science than the materialist philosophy. It points out that experiments can prove the non-materialist philosophy, but experiments do not support the materialist philosophy in many of the important spiritual events.

I have often been conflicted in attempts to comport logic with piety. The Spiritual Brain has expanded my scope of thought to the point where I think there may be no conflict just a lot more to learn.
